    Brew/Awards Festival:  Feb 27, 2009

    Homebrew Competition:

The Peterson Air Force Base (AFB) Homebrew Festival competition is an AHA/BJCP sanctioned event.  The purpose of the event is to showcase local home brewers by providing a competition environment as well as the ability to share their brews with other brewers and festival attendees on Feb 27 at the Peterson Club.

Categories - All BJCP categories including mead and cider

Combined BJCP categories will be used to enable the entire range of entries while keeping the number of categories manageable.  Categories may further be combined/separated based on number of entries at the discretion of the judges.

Please include the category and sub-category when you enter your beer.  Ex:  5d, Bock, Eisbock

    Entries:

Entries will be accepted Feb 12 – 19, 2009.  Entry fee is $5 for one and $10 for unlimited.

Each entry consists of two (2) bottles, entry fee and an entry/recipe form.  Each bottle must have a bottle ID form attached with rubber bands.  Bottles must have no labels, or other identifying markings (besides the bottle ID form).  Entry/recipe and bottle ID forms can be found here:

    Awards:

Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, designed just for this event, will be awarded in each category.  Additionally, a best in show award will be given and a crowd favorite will be voted on at the event.  All awards will be presented at the Fest on Feb 27 along with scoresheets.  If you are not present, they will be mailed to you.

    Homebrew/Awards Fest:

This is the fun part!  Homebrew entrants and judges and their guest get into the festival for free!  It’s at 5PM on Feb 27 at the Peterson Club.  We are asking that all entrants bring some of their brew to share with other brewers and festival attendees.  Recommend you bring at least 24, 12oz bottles, a couple growlers or the keg equivalent to share on Feb 27, 2009.  Ideally, it would be some of the beer you entered in the competition.  You’ll be serving next to some of our local micros and there will be prizes for the crowd favorites.  All brewers will be responsible for dispensing their beer to festival guests.  Size of pour will be no more than 2 oz.  The Peterson Club will provide booth space for each entrant to serve their beer – see below to let the Club know that you need booth space.

    Maple Nut Brown Explosion

On Friday Corey and I brewed up a new recipe: Maple Nut Brown.  Everything went great until I opted not to use a blow-off tube instead choosing an airlock on the bucket.  Big mistake!  Last night the lid blew clear off and sprayed beer everywhere.  I cleaned up the mess but forgot to take pics.  Bummer!  I don't think the lid was off long enough for any cooties to get in, but I'll update the blog as things ferment out.   The lesson here (as Axe so succinctly pointed out) is when pitching a yeast starter, ALWAYS USE A BLOW-OFF TUBE! Cheers! Bobby

Brew Brothers South New Year's Kickoff (50% complete)

Today Corey and Bobby completed part one of our 2008 kickoff brewing session...UPS doesn't deliver on Saturday so we have to wait until Monday for Corey's batch.  We got a little conference call action going with AxeBrew to keep us entertained during the sparge, and in the end the Paddy's Pig Irish Red turned out great.  OG was 1.060! (.050 predicted)  Some brats and burgers, and some fantastic homebrew fueled the day.  If only Pittsburgh had done so well...
